William Boyd's James Bond adventure Solo will hit bookstores in paperback format on 8 May in the UK.
The artwork, (left), featuring the logo from the UK hardback release also features an eye logo which, Ian Fleming Publications describe as:
The single eye that stares boldly from the centre is reminiscent of the iconic original artwork for FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, designed by Richard Chopping.
Personally I think that it looks a lot more like the paperback artwork for Zero Minus Ten by Raymond Benson.
Have a look at the photo opposite to see what I mean.
Is this just lazy cover design - or is an eye an iconic point of reference for 007 and the spy genre in general. After all spying is all about observing things isn't it?
Bond fans in the US have a more original cover art with US Publisher HarperCollins taking a fresh approach to their original hardback cover illustration, (left) - which I think superbly and stylishly captures the 1969 setting of the book.
The only downside is that the paperback isn't released until 3 June.
